Signs of a Rat Infestation
There are plenty of signs to look out for that point to a rat problem. Some of the most common signs include:
Sounds: You may hear light shuffling or soft scratching in your walls, ceiling or crawlspace. These sounds can occur at any time during the day.
Droppings and urine: Rat droppings look like black pellets and range in size from ½” to ¾” in length. You may also see rat urine, which is oily with a musty smell.
Smells: If your infestation is moderate, you may start to smell the feces and urine left behind. It’s often an overwhelmingly musty, slightly ammonia-like smell.
Claw and chew marks: You may notice claw or chew marks on walls near baseboards or on paper boxes and bags. Some rats will also chew through your exterior walls, especially in places where there’s an entry hole, such as holes in siding and holes for electrical cables.
There isn’t one single method for exterminating rats. In fact, it’s best to call a pest control specialist who can come and take a look first to determine an extermination plan. Different areas of your home such as your attic, crawlspace and walls may require different treatment methods.
Our team of exterminators first focuses on exclusion. We determine where rats are entering your home and fix that issue first. We’ll then determine the best next step, which could be trapping or baiting, depending on the size and location of the infestation.
