How to Deep Clean Your Oven Without Chemicals

A grimy oven doesn't just look bad — baked-on grease and food residue can smoke, smell, and even affect how evenly your food cooks. Commercial oven cleaners work fast, but they're loaded with harsh fumes that linger in your kitchen and aren't something you want anywhere near your food. The good news is that a handful of natural ingredients, most of which are already in your pantry, can cut through even stubborn buildup with a bit of time and elbow grease.

What You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • A spray bottle
  • A soft cloth or sponge
  • A plastic or silicone scraper (avoid metal, which can scratch the interior)
  • Rubber gloves (optional, but kind to your hands)

Step 1: Remove the Racks

Take out the oven racks and any removable trays. Soak them in a basin of hot water with a generous splash of dish soap while you work on the oven interior — this loosens grease so it wipes off easily later.

Step 2: Make a Baking Soda Paste

Mix about half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water until you get a spreadable paste — think thick frosting, not runny batter. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and alkaline, which makes it excellent at breaking down grease and carbonized food without scratching enamel surfaces.

Step 3: Coat the Interior

Using gloved hands or a spatula, spread the paste generously across the bottom, sides, and door of the oven — avoid the heating elements. Pay extra attention to areas with visible burnt-on residue. Let it sit for at least 12 hours, or overnight for heavily soiled ovens. The paste will dry slightly and darken as it absorbs grime.

Step 4: Spray with Vinegar

The next day, fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar and mist it over the dried baking soda paste. You'll see a satisfying fizzy reaction as the acid in the vinegar reacts with the baking soda — this bubbling action helps lift softened grease away from the surface.

Step 5: Wipe It Down

Once the fizzing settles, use a damp cloth to wipe away the paste. For tougher spots, use the plastic scraper to gently lift off residue, then follow with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining film. You may need to go over the interior a couple of times to get every trace of baking soda off, since leftover residue can leave white streaks when the oven heats up again.

Step 6: Clean the Glass Door

For the oven door, apply the same baking soda paste to the interior glass and let it sit for 20–30 minutes before wiping clean. If there's buildup between double-glazed panels, this method won't reach it — that typically requires professional disassembly.

Step 7: Scrub and Replace the Racks

By now the racks should have loosened grease from soaking. Scrub them with a sponge, rinse thoroughly, dry, and slide them back into place.

Step 8: Do a Final Wipe and Air Out

Give the whole interior one last wipe with a clean, damp cloth, then leave the oven door open for 15–20 minutes to air out before your next use.

A Few Tips for Best Results

  • Tackle the job when the oven has been off long enough to be completely cool.
  • For very heavy buildup, repeat the baking soda step a second time rather than reaching for stronger products.
  • Wipe up spills as they happen going forward — a quick clean after cooking prevents the need for a deep clean at all.

Done regularly, this chemical-free method keeps your oven performing well, smelling neutral, and safe for the food you cook in it — no fumes, no residue, no compromise.
