High access window cleaning is a specialized service that requires the right equipment, technical expertise, and strict safety protocols. Whether you're managing a high-rise office block in Nairobi's CBD or a multi-storey residential apartment in Westlands, professional cleaners rely on a range of advanced tools to deliver spotless results safely. In this article, Cleaner-Kenya breaks down the essential tools used in high access window cleaning and why professional-grade equipment matters.
Why Specialized Tools Matter
Cleaning windows at heights of 10, 20, or even 50 floors is not a job for ordinary ladders and squeegees. High access window cleaning demands equipment designed for safety, efficiency, and superior cleaning results. Using the wrong tools not only compromises quality but also puts workers' lives at risk. That's why professional cleaning companies in Kenya invest heavily in industry-approved gear.
Essential Tools for High Access Window Cleaning
1. Water-Fed Pole Systems
The water-fed pole is one of the most revolutionary tools in modern window cleaning. These telescopic poles can extend up to 20 meters or more, allowing cleaners to reach upper-floor windows while standing safely on the ground. They use purified or deionized water, which dries without leaving streaks or mineral deposits—eliminating the need for chemical detergents.
2. Rope Access Systems (Abseiling)
For skyscrapers and buildings with complex architecture, rope access—also known as abseiling—is the go-to method. Technicians use industrial climbing ropes, harnesses, descenders, and rope protection devices to rappel down building facades. This technique is cost-effective compared to other access methods and allows cleaners to reach virtually any point on a building.
3. Suspended Platforms and Boatswain's Chairs
Suspended scaffolding platforms, often called swing stages, are motorized platforms that lower workers along a building's exterior. For smaller jobs, a boatswain's chair—a simple seat suspended by ropes—provides a stable working position. Both are fitted with safety harnesses and fall arrest systems.
4. Cherry Pickers and Boom Lifts
For mid-rise buildings, cherry pickers (aerial work platforms) offer a stable, mobile solution. These hydraulic lifts allow cleaners to access windows up to 40 meters high with full mobility and safety rails. They are especially useful for buildings with smooth, accessible ground surfaces.
5. Squeegees, Scrubbers, and T-Bars
Despite high-tech access equipment, the actual cleaning still depends on classic tools. Professional-grade squeegees with extension handles, microfiber scrubbers, and T-bar applicators ensure streak-free, crystal-clear glass. Quality rubber blades are replaced regularly to maintain perfect results.
6. Pure Water Technology
Deionized water systems are mounted on vans or portable tanks. Because pure water contains no minerals or impurities, it cleans glass naturally and leaves no residue—ideal for eco-conscious property managers in Kenya.
7. Safety Gear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
No high access job is complete without proper PPE: safety helmets, harnesses, lanyards, high-visibility vests, gloves, and non-slip footwear. Fall arrest anchors and edge protection systems are also mandatory for compliance with occupational safety standards.
Choosing the Right Method
The choice of tools depends on several factors: building height, facade design, ground conditions, and budget. A professional cleaning company conducts a site survey before recommending the safest and most efficient method.
