This inert fraction settles and compacts at the base of the chamber, year after year, gradually reducing the digester's working volume. The process follows a strict sequence. First, we measure: the residue layer is gauged at several points to establish its depth and volume, which determines both the price and the extraction plan. Second, we extract selectively: the suction wand works the base of the chamber section by section, removing the inert sludge while the active liquid medium remains in place. Third, we loosen where necessary: compacted zones are broken up with the low-flow lance and re-extracted. Fourth, we verify: a second measurement confirms that the residue has been reduced to a trace layer. Fifth, we inspect the outlet path and soak pit to make sure the effluent line is flowing freely. Sixth, we reseed with bacterial culture, reseal the covers, wash down the work area, and issue a service report with the next recommended inspection date.

Recovery then takes weeks, with odour and poor breakdown in the meantime.
