Chair rails (also called “dado rails” or skirting‑top trim) gather dust, grease, and fingerprints from chairs and everyday household activity, but they are easy to clean with simple tools and the right technique.

What you’ll need

  • Soft micro‑fibre cloths

  • A soft‑bristle brush or old toothbrush

  • Bucket of warm water

  • Mild dish‑washing liquid or a pH‑neutral all‑purpose cleaner

  • A small sponge or clean rag

  • Optional: wood‑safe polish (for stained or varnished rails)

Step‑by‑step cleaning

  1. Prepare the area
Move furniture a few centimetres away from the wall so you can reach the chair rail easily.
Remove any dust or loose debris with a dry micro‑fibre cloth or a soft brush.

  2. Dampen the cloth, not the wall
Mix a few drops of dish‑washing liquid into warm water.
Dip your cloth into the solution, then wring it out almost completely so it’s only slightly damp. Excess water can damage paint or wood finishes.

  3. Wipe the rail surface
Gently wipe along the rail with the damp cloth, going with the grain of wood or moulding.
For stubborn stains or grease marks, focus a bit more pressure and go over the area several times.

  4. Clean corners and profiles
Use a soft‑bristle brush or an old toothbrush to reach into carved edges, grooves, and corners where dust accumulates.
Brush lightly, then follow with a damp cloth to remove loosened dirt.

  5. Tackle serious stains carefully
For set‑in stains, avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
You can make a paste of baking soda and a tiny bit of water, apply it with a cloth to the affected patch, leave for a minute, then wipe off with a clean, damp cloth and dry immediately.

  6. Dry thoroughly
After wiping, run a dry micro‑fibre cloth over the entire rail to remove leftover moisture and prevent water marks.
If the rail is wooden and not painted, you can apply a light wood‑safe polish afterward to protect it and give it a fresh finish.

  7. Repeat as needed
For high‑traffic rooms, clean the chair rail every few weeks; for quieter areas, once every 1–2 months is usually enough to keep it looking clean and fresh.

By following this simple DIY routine, you can keep your chair rails looking bright and remove built‑up grime without risking damage to paint or wood.
